Doug Baldwin of Seattle Seahawks carried the Philippines flag when he
got out of the dugout during their game against the Minnesota Vikings on
Sunday. According to reports, Baldwin’s act was to give honor to the victims of
the typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

Baldwin’s grandmother and some of his relatives are living in the
Philippines and are unaffected by the typhoon.
However, netizens were quick to note that the flag was held wrong
side up by Baldwin. The red bar is on top which is only being done during time of
war. The photo showing Baldwin carrying
the flag was posted by the football team in its official twitter account. The
Seahawks tweeted, “We are fighting the devastation of #Haiyan which has been
worse than many war-torn regions of the world”.
Baldwin has also tweeted about the upside down flag.
"If I offended anyone of the Philippines, it was not my intent.
I only meant to call attention to the plight of the people devastated by
typhoon Haiyan. The aftermath of the typhoon can be compared to conditions
after a battle during war. Leyte is battling to overcome the ravages of typhoon
Haiyan. My blessings and well wishes are with the families impacted by this
disaster".
The Seahawks went on to win the game against the Vikings and they
are now heralded as one of the favorites in winning the Superbowl.
The simple but sincere act of Doug Baldwin will certainly add to
those many people who have already shown their sympathy, support, care and love
to all the victims of the typhoon.
