The show started with the announcement that Carlos Guevara is eliminated. Too bad he wasn't able to sing his version of Mad World. Tonight, its 80s night in the X Factor USA 2013. Tomorrow there will be a double elimination, ending with the top 10.
Who doesn't love the 80s? It was the decade of shoulder pads, legwarmers, mixtapes, arcade games and amazing music from Michael Jackson, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Menudo, among others.
We were all amused to see this photo of Simon back in the 80s.
As Paulina said the good thing about 80s is you have an excuse to get wild and be different. It was indeed the best decade in music. There's a wide array of song choices. They definitely cannot make a mistake on that. And most of them did a good job.
The night had great lighting, plenty of back up singers and dancers. The choreography were excelent except for the dancer who was like a zombie in the Tim Olstad performance. Simon even said it was like a horror movie. Mario was dancing all night and at one point tried to imitate the moves of the king of pop. Simon
commented that his effort was atrocious.
Most of them were able to relate to the theme except for Rion Page who was asked by her mentor Demi how much she knows about the 80s. Then she respond she likes Spice Girls to which Demi laughed and corrected her that they're from the 90s.
Alright lets proceed to the recap.
Lillie McCloud started good with an upbeat Ain't Nobody by Chakka Khan. She followed Simon's advice to be current. It was a fun performance.
Carlito Olivero was off in the Rhythm is Gonna Get You by Gloria Estefan. He was too focused on the moves. Simon predicted that he might be going home. Demi paid more attention to the dancers.
Rion Paige showed her country voice with We Belong by Pat Benatar. I didn't think it was great. Simon criticized the song choice.
Tim Olstad didn't do well with Against All Odds by Phil Collins. He might need all the support from his new found friend Sarah Hyland from Modern Family. She even attended to show support. Demi commented Tim Olstad might be eliminated.
Sweet Suspense were cool with Mickey by Toni Basil. The entire production number might be too much for them. Demi felt they lack stage presence.
Khaya Cohen nailed Borderline by Madonna. She dressed the part and sounded really amazing. The voice quality was clean. She's ready for the music business, said Kelly. She is a front runner by far.
Restless Road had a predictable song choice, Footloose by Kenny Loggins. Good thing, they stayed true to their country roots. It's better than last week. It was a refreshing version. Demi said they have the X Factor.
Rachel Potter did well in Alone by Heart. The start was a little rough but she ended it beautifully. Great performance. Simon commented that the high note sounded like a scream to which Kelly responded nobody from his group can hit those notes. Very true.
Ellona Santiago gave justice to I Wanna Dance With Somebody ( Who Loves Me ) by Whitney Houston. She almost slipped at one point but overall she sang well especially the last part as pointed out by Simon. I hope in the next performance she would just sing without the choreography to really showcase her voice.
Josh Levi crushed the competition with Straight Up by Paula Abdul. It was truly sensational according to Simon. It didn't sound 80s at all. He was like Usher. The moves were impeccable. As I've said in my previous post, if he continues to do well, he could be in the finals.
Jeff Gutt didn't do well in I Just Died in YOur Arms by Cutting Crew. He struggled with the notes. Good thing that he's the only rocker in the group. So the rock fans could still save him.
Alex & Sierra - are still better if they sing right to each other with Addicted to Love by Robert Palmer. The first part was off but they ended great. I am still a fan. Simon admitted the melody didn't go well as expected. But hey they are still safe. No worries.
Fearless Forecast.
Overall, the 80s theme show went well. My top 3 went to Josh Levi, Khaya Cohen and Ellona Santiago. The bottom three who might be going home are Carlito Olivero, Tim Olstad and Jeff Gutt.
That's about it. Stay tuned as we bring you the results tomorrow night. Watch out for the performances from Fifth Harmony and Selena Gomez.
