YouTube Debuts Music Awards, Spontaneous and Fun

The first ever YouTube Music Awards was not any other music awards show you have seen in the past. Unlike the Grammys, AMA or VMA, it's spontaneous and at times messy. But it's all unexpected fun.

The usual awards show would take several months to prepare however the YouTube team claimed to only had 7 days to rehearse. It held true to the culture within YouTube Community - raw, unscripted and cluttered entertainment. I think this is the first award show where you see crying babies being presented to the winner. Creative, right?

Hosted by  actor Jason Schwartzman and musician Reggie Watts, the show celebrated artists, songs and videox that became phemomenal. It was shown  live-streaming across the globe and ran for 90 minutes starting 6:00pm ET. It was held at Pier 36 in New York City. Performers included Lady Gaga, Eminem, Arcade Fire, Avicii and M.I.A.

As is customary in the YouTube Community, nominees were chosen based on views, shares, likes, comments and subscribers during the year. Results were based on your votes. And here are the winners :

  • YouTube Breakthrough of the Year - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
  • Response of the Year - Lindsey Stirling and Pentatonix, "Radioactive"
  • Innovation of the Year - DeStorm, "See Me Standing"
  • YouTube Phenomenon - I Knew You Were Trouble by Taylor Swift
  • Video of the Year - Girls' Generation, "I Got A Boy"
  • Artist of the Year- Eminem

Its just surprising to see that neither Rihanna,  Psy or Justin Bieber didn't win as they have the most views or followers  in YouTube. Other losers included One Direction, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Selena Gomez and my favorite ThePianoGuys.

Initial statistics showed only almost 900,000 views on the live streaming. It  could be that  streaming in countries like here in Singapore were not available.  I had to watch through webcast in other sites.

Over all, the show was refreshing. It strayed away from the usual awards show we have seen. I like the part where they made a spoof about Taylor Swift-Kanye West scene at the MTV Video Music Awards. It was hilarious. I wonder, though, why only huge musicians were featured? What they should do next time is to showcase other famous acts who made global hits. After all, YouTube is about all these ordinary yet talented individuals.

What do you think of the YouTube Music Awards ? Is it innovative or just weird ? Do we need another music awards show?
