The Big Bang Theory Season 7 Episode 7, The Proton Displacement

The Big Bang Theory Season 7 Episode 7, the Proton Displacement  is by far the funniest episode in the season. Dr Arthur Jeffries, a.k.a. Professor Proton ( played by Emmy award winner Bob Newhart ) is back and he is funnier and wittier. Then learn Sheldon's big 3 of social skills.

The comedy show is still the highest rated sitcom in the US with average viewers of 24 million. For this episode, I am delighted to see professor Proton back. I noticed he has more screen time and hilarious moments. Just a background, As kids, Sheldon and Leonard adored Professor Proton as he makes learning science cool and appealing for children.

So here's our recap:

At the drugstore, Sheldon, Leonard and Amy run into Professor Proton . Sheldon suggests that they approach him and Leonard says they should not bother him to which Sheldon disagrees and explains they won't bother but would only talk to him. While Sheldon goes ahead, Leonard comments to Amy that Sheldon does not recognize the difference. Sheldon tells the professor, he may not remember him because of his advanced age, but Arthur says he remembers them especially Leonard, because of Penny. The professor is surprised that Sheldon has a girlfriend but understood it when Amy pointed out that they wear the same orthopedic shoes, praising herself by dressing like a celebrity.

At work the next day, Leonard gets an e-mail from Arthur asking him if they could work together on a project. Sheldon was initially delighted to get two emails from the professor but was disappointed to know the professor was only asking for the email of Leonard and later telling him he managed to find it already.

At the apartment, Sheldon tells Amy about his bitterness to which Amy suggests that Arthur might find "him much". Sheldon disagrees and asserts that he knows the big three of social skills. Amy points out to him that, the professor or some people might find him , then she stops to avoid hurting Sheldon. Then Sheldon asks what and realized what she meant then insist that  she say he is annoying. Amy walks away while Sheldon annoyingly keep on asking her to say it. When Amy left, he tells himself that Amy can't stand it when he's right.

Sheldon goes to see Arthur and propose that, with his good reputation, they work together. Arthur refused. Then Sheldon clarified if he finds him annoying. Just like what he did to Amy,, he keep on asking, even if the professor closes the door. A little later, Arthur told Sheldon in his face, he is annoying. Then Sheldon confessed it really hurt.

The next day, while Leonard is helping Arthur at work, Sheldon informs them he has now befriended TV scientist, Bill Nye. Upon meeting Arthur, Bill is very excited but Arthur appeared upset and tells Bill to leave as he has stolen enough ideas from  his show. After Sheldon and Bill leave, Arthur asks Leonard how he manages to be friends with Sheldon. He explains that, while Sheldon has his quirks, he is the smartest person Leonard knows and they both need each other. Later, Arthur decides to let Sheldon read his paper, but Sheldon admits he had already hacked into his e-mail account to read it. Sheldon told him that his paper is great and then invites him for tea, which Arthur accepts once he sees Penny in the apartment.
In between scenes, Raj and the girls are making jewelry during girls' night. Howard crashes the party, interfere's with Raj's plans and indirectly makes fun of his lack of masculinity. Then he helps the girls with their jewelry by offering them more sophisticated equipment to use. Howard joins the girls again for another girls' night, which upsets Raj again. Raj turns his jealousy into cynical remarks and Howard apologizes to Raj after finding out how much his feelings were hurt. Amy ends with a remark that the two of them will end up having sex before Sheldon and her do.

In the next scene, Raj went to see Howard to say he is sorry. Using the techniques Howard taught them, Raj made him a light sabre belt buckle. Howard was impressed by the idea and gets amazed when Raj turned the light on.  Excitedly, Raj showed he is wearing a similar one he made one for himself too and suggested that they could have a sword fight anythime they want.

The last scene shows Sheldon, Leonard, Penny and the professor hanging out together. Arthur asks Penny if she has any single grandmother. Penny answered the are both married. Then Arthur asked if happily to which Penny just nod.

This is one of the best episodes this season. It shows funny and heartwarming moments about friendship betwen Sheldon & Leonard and Howard & Raj. The Guest appearances of Bob and Bill made it also refreshing. If they continue to present new faces, then they will keep the show interesting.

As usual, the big highlights went to Sheldon. These are my favorite scenes:

  • He discusses with Amy that when it comes to social skills, he mastered the big three : coy smile, friendly chuckle and vocalization of sympathy.
  • He tells Arthur that having birthday as the password is embarrassing
  • His annoying moments with Amy and Arthur
